- Rocketry
for Teachers:
A 3 day seminar (onsite at your location or at scheduled sites) exploring rocketry and its varied uses in education.
These classes can be geared toward skills/curriculum appropriate to the following (pleases specify grades when scheduling) grades 3-5, 6-8, 9-12, and college level. Topics include: Rocket-Mathematics, Rocket-Physics, Rocket-Chemistry,
Thermodynamics, Aerodynamics, General Space Travel, Simulation vs. Modeling
(and doing a good job at both), Data Acquisition/Telemetry, Construction
Techniques, Safety, Legal Stuff, Curriculum Ideas, Reading/Video Lists, etc....
Some sample software (depending on grade-level): RockSim (Rocket Design
& Simulation), Splash (High Altitude Trajectory Simulation), PDA
Calc (a programmable scientific/graphic calculator for Palm OS &
Windows), Orbit (a ballistic simulator), SciLab & Scicos (freeware
mathematics package & simulation environment), Maxima (freeware
symbolic math package), VisualCFD, HyperCFD, Aerolsp, etc.... Depending on grade-level curriculum emphasis, some or all of the following will be discussed and built: straw-rockets, air-rockets, water-rockets, commercial solid-rocket kits, building your own sugar-based solid rocket motors and rockets.
The emphasis of all this is hands-on exploration and problem solving , in order to motivate an exploration of the underlying math & physics, as well as its history and application.
$795 for groups of 1 to 10 teachers with 1/2 hr of Alamogordo, NM. $1,395 for locations elsewhere in New Mexico.
[For onsite trainings outside of New Mexico, the fee is $2,395 + travel & lodging]
